Nicaragua is home to the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve in the northeast of the country, and the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve in the southeast, near the San Juan River. In both areas natural life abounds, the vegetation is abundant, and a wide range of fauna has successfully established itself with a way of life of which few other examples exist on this planet which has had its natural resources exploited by humans to a devastating degree. Also well worth mentioning is the El Arenal Natural Reserve in the Matagalpa department of the country, a mountainous region with excellent views and beautiful forests.
Volcanoes
The most important volcano in Nicaragua is Cosigüina volcano, which is 860 metres tall, and last erupted in 1859. Inside the volcano is a lake which covers an area of 2 square kilometers. The other large volcanoes in the country are Marabios, Momotombito, Maderas and Concepcion.
Mombacho is also a volcano in the Mombacho reserve, another protected natural space in Nicaragua.
Lakes
Managua Lake is the second biggest lake in Nicaragua. It covers an area of 1000 square kilometers, and has a maximum depth of 40 metres. This is a volcanic lake with a circular form, and it is connected to Lake Cocibolba by the Tipitapa River.
The largest lake in Nicaragua is Lake Nicaragua, home of the island of Omepete.
Islands
