Nicaragua is a Central American country with a population of about 6 million inhabitants. It borders Honduras to the northeast, Costa Rica to the south and the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean to the west. It has been an independent country since 1821. On September 15th of that year it gained independence from Spain. Nicaragua is a country in Central America with a Caribbean coastline. The natural beauty of the area, the great beaches and the warm, friendly people are the main attractions of this country, which covers 130,000 square kilometers. The country is divided into 15 departments and two different regions, and the capital city Managua has nearly 2 million inhabitants, whose main language is Spanish. Much of the population also speaks fluent English, especially in the Caribbean area of Bluefields and on the Solentiname Islands.
Nicaragua lives mainly from agriculture, fishing, and cattle farming, although in recent years tourism has gained a lot of ground in certain areas such as the capital, and in the Caribbean and Pacific coastal areas. The summer season in Nicaragua extends from November until March. The period with most rainfall is between June and November, which is also when there is the greatest danger of hurricanes and of flooding, a phenomena which has sadly affected the development of this Central American country on countless occasions.
Savannahs, beaches, virgin mountains, great lakes, volcanoes, jungles… all make up the landscape of this Caribbean country, a landscape which is inhabited by more than 200 species of animals including jaguars, pumas and several types of monkeys.
Nicaragua enjoys a rich mixture of Hispanic and indigenous cultures. The predominant religion is Catholicism which was imposed during the Spanish colonization of the area.
